WRAD has 100,000 reasons to celebrate Christmas after receiving a major donation. Western District businessman and philanthropist Geoff Handbury, AO, has confirmed another $100,000 donation to WRAD – bringing his total donations over the past six years to $600,000.
WRAD Director Geoff Soma said support from the Handbury family was incredibly generous.
“This substantial donation will go a long way to help WRAD alleviate its mortgage repayments which will free up funds to help people in need on the ground,” Mr Soma said.
“It helps to bridge the shortfall between state government funding, which covers less than half of WRAD’s total costs. WRAD relies on fee-for-service clients, fund-raising and donations to continue providing services to clients, so a donation of this magnitude makes a significant difference,” he said. “This complicated funding structure is required to provide a range of services to meet the vast array of issues associated with this health problem.”
Mr Soma said the donation would relieve pressures on the service and support people to make changes that benefit themselves, their families and the community. “Christmas is a time to celebrate the generosity of people like Geoff Handbury and to acknowledge those people who are brave enough to take on the challenge of recovery,” Mr Soma said.
Mr Handbury made his first major donation to WRAD in 2007 towards its appeal for a new building in Merri Street. At the time he said he was highly impressed with WRAD’s commitment and its unique service to the south-west community.
WRAD also offers a bulk billing general practice to provide essential health care for the region.
